Shipment Confirmation Email Shows FedEx URL for UPS Tracking Number

Q - How is the URL used in the shipment confirmation email determined?  We have a case where the FedEx URL is used for a UPS shipment, which obviously doesn’t work. See sample below:


A - Elliott tries to determine the carrier based on the length of the tracking number.  You need to go to A/R -> Maintenance -> Carrier File Maintenance, bring up Carrier Code 1 for UPS, and indicate the tracking number length in field “17. Tracking No Length.”  This field will initially be blank.  UPS tracking numbers are 18 digits.  See sample screen below:

You should also bring up carriers 3 (FedEx Air) and 4 (FedEx Ground) and enter all the possible tracking number lengths.  From my understanding, FedEx tracking numbers are usually 12 – 14 digits. FedEx Ground are often 15 digits, and some specialized services may have 20-digit tracking numbers.  

Carrier 2 is for USPS. The standard USPS tracking number is 22 digits. The Priority Mail Express is 13 digits, which can conflict with FedEx.  You need to decide whether to reserve the 13 digits for USPS or FedEx, but not both.  Otherwise, it can cause confusion in Elliott.
