Windows Security (Defender) Complains about Payware CertificateUtility.exe Program File
Release Date: 06/04/2025
Version: 8.5 & Earlier
Q - Windows Security (Defender?) is complaining about the CertificateUtility.exe file in the Payware folder on the Elliott
server. See sample screen below. What are your thoughts?
Program: Win32/Wacapew.C!ml
..\Payware\V1.0\CommonSSL\CertificateUtility.exe
A - CertificateUtility.exe is a program provided by Verifone for
their Credit Card POS processing. We are providing it as it is. We don’t
know why Windows Defender does not like it. Unless you use POS with Verifone MX credit card devices, you will have nothing to do with this program. Therefore, you can remove it without causing any
issue. Just FYI, we no longer distribute it in Elliott 8.6.
