Setting up a Google Gmail Account in Elliott SMTP Configuration

Setting up a Google Gmail Account in Elliott SMTP Configuration

Release Date: 10/19/2017
Revised Date: 08/01/2024

Revised on 07/31/2024:
Starting on September 30, 2024, less secure apps, third-party apps, or devices that have you sign in with only your username and password will no longer be supported for Google Workspace accounts. See the following article:

In a move to support the transition, Google removed the "Less secure apps" configuration and you will not be able to find it in Google apps on 07/31/2024.  Therefore, you will not be able to use Elliott SMTP with Gmail now. On the other hand, there are many other email services providers support SMTP, this includes Microsoft Outlook 365 (Office 365), Exchange on-line, Sendgrid, SMTP2GO....etc.

Revised on 8/1/2024:
The alternative to above problem is that you can "Use App-Specific Passwords" to make Gmail works:

  • If you have 2-Step Verification enabled, you will need to generate an app-specific password for your email client or application.
  • Log in to your Google account.
  • Go to the "Security" section.
  • Under "Signing in to Google," select "App passwords."
  • Generate a new app password and use it instead of your regular Gmail password.

Below is old information and obsoleted:
You can use your Google Gmail account to send email through Elliott SMTP, but there are some settings to change.

Make sure to use port 587. Gmail uses this port for authentication. There is a place to specify the port in the Elliott configuration:

Gmail security prevents non-Google applications from sending email. But there is a setting to allow other applications to send mail.

Log into to Gmail.
Go to the "Less secure apps" section in My Account.
Next to "Access for less secure apps," select Turn on. This setting may be hidden if your administrator has locked the less secure app account access.
