Give Bin86 Folder Everyone Group Read & Execute Rights If NTFS Security Was Implemented

Version: 8.6
Release Date: 09/15/2021

Q - I just installed Elliott 8.6 on the PSQL Server.  The installation was successful.  Now, when I go to each workstation and use EL860.exe to run local, I get the following message:
"This application could not be started."
Or, sometimes, I may get this message:
    "EL860.exe has stopped working."
See sample screen below:

A - It is likely caused by NTFS security. The installation of Elliott 8.6 will create a BIN86 folder under the  <ElliottRoot> folder. If you implemented NTFS security, then the user will not have sufficient security to run <ElliottRoot>\Bin86\EL860.exe. By default, you need to give the Everyone group "Read & Execute" rights to the BIN86 folder.  The following example shows that Everyone only has "List folder contents" rights for the  Bin86 folder by default due to NTFS security implementation:

You should give Everyone the "Read & Execute" rights as shown below:

Now try again.

Keep in mind this same NTFS security issue can also affect the following programs in the Bin86 folder:
  • EL860CF.exe - Configuration Utility
  • EL860DB.exe - Database Management Utility
  • EL860RD.exe - Report Desk
Your message may look like the following:
    "EL860CF.exe has stopped working."
